Super Sonic is Sonic the Hedgehog's "super form," taking this form when all of the Chaos Emeralds have been collected. The concept was first introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and has been a gimmick used in almost every Sonic game to date, including Sonic R.
He is an essential part to summoning the Tails Doll from Sonic R, as catching him in Tag Mode with the Tails Doll after the other steps have been followed will draw the Tails Doll from the game. It is said that tagging Super Sonic gives the Tails Doll the power to invade reality.
Sonic first became Super Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, when he collected all of the Chaos Emeralds and powered up in order to defeat Dr. Robotnik.
Super Sonic is unlocked by collecting the seven Chaos Emeralds found on each stage in the game. Once unlocked, Super Sonic can be selected by clicking down on Sonic. Super Sonic is much faster than Sonic and can float a bit. When used on the stage Radiant Emerald, the music changes to his theme song for that game, Super Sonic Racing.
Super Sonic looks just like Sonic, except he is gold colored. His quills spike up, while Sonic's go down. Super Sonic gives off a shimmer and sparkle.
- The concept of a powered-up version of Sonic came from the Dragon Ball manga, where the main character Goku had a Super Saiyan form. Even Super Sonic's appearance is based off the form (bright yellow, with a glow being visible in newer appearances, spiked-up spines).
